Chapter Six

“SO, JIMMY BARCLAY told Justin Morgan that he heard from Karen Willard that her dad was listening to the police band radio, and they said there was a disturbance in Henry Hecht’s garage late last night, and they thought it was the escaped convict trying to get a car or a change of clothes or something like that!”

Oscar was talking in that high-pitched voice he got when he was excited. It was the next day, the day after I’d seen someone in the yard. Oscar and I were having lunch in the school cafeteria. Up until then, it had been a normal kind of day. Everybody was talking about the escaped convict, and I was keeping an eye on Lucy and Colin. Since I didn’t know which one I was supposed to trust, I figured it was best to keep my distance from both of them. I don’t think either of them noticed.

“We locked all our doors and windows last night. We’re not taking any chances!” Oscar said without any sign that he would ever stop talking.

“What makes you think an escaped convict would want to come near your house?” Colin said. As usual, he showed up just in time to make a sharp comment.

Oscar was flustered. “I didn’t say he would want to come to my house. I just said that . . . Oh, never mind. I think I’ll go to the library.”

Oscar got up to leave. He looked at me like I was supposed to say something to stop him, but I didn’t see any reason I should. It was obvious that Colin made him nervous, so it was probably best that he leave. Besides, I hadn’t finished my piece of cardboard apple pie.

Colin sat down, opened his brown lunch bag, pulled out an apple, and took a big, crunchy bite out of it. “You and Oscar been friends a long time?” he asked.

“Since second grade,” I answered.

“I guess that means you think you know him real well.”

“He’s my friend. I guess I know him pretty well.”

“Bet you don’t know why he keeps going to the library at lunch.”

“Bet I do,” I said. “He keeps going to the library to get away from you.”

Colin smiled. “That’s probably what he wants you to think, but there’s an another reason.”

“Oh yeah? Like what?”

“He goes there to meet Lucy.”

“What do you mean?”

“Did I stutter? He goes there to meet Lucy,” Colin said again.

“Why would Oscar go to the library to meet Lucy? That doesn’t make sense.”

Colin took another bite of his apple. “It makes sense if you can figure out what they’re up to.”

I rolled my eyes and said, “Yeah, right, like they’re up to something.”

Colin shrugged.

“What would they be up to?” I asked.

“Who knows?” Colin said. “Maybe they’re talking about you. Maybe that’s one way Lucy finds out what you’re up to so she can tell your parents.”

“Aw, cut it out!” I said and angrily tossed my fork onto my tray. “What’s with you, anyway? What’s the big
